**New York (CNN)** — Labor Day falls on Monday, September 2, marking the unofficial close of summer in 2024.

As students start heading back to school, many Americans take advantage of one last long weekend to host a summer barbecue or plan a beach getaway.

Labor Day, observed on the first Monday in September, honors the American labor movement and the significant contributions workers have made to the U.S. economy.

However, that doesn’t mean the day will be free from errands. Whether it's a quick trip to the bank or grabbing a last-minute ingredient from the grocery store, many will still be out and about.

Here’s a look at what’s open and closed on Labor Day 2024.

**Retail Stores:** Most shoppers will find that stores are open. Nearly all Kroger-owned chains—including Kroger, Ralphs, Dillons, Smith’s, King Soopers, Fry’s, QFC, City Market, Owen’s, Jay C, Pay Less, Baker’s, Gerbes, Harris Teeter, Pick ‘n Save, Metro Market, Mariano’s, Fred Meyer, and Food 4 Less—will operate with regular hours.

Most CVS Pharmacy locations will be open on Labor Day, though some may have reduced hours. Walgreens stores will operate on their regular schedule, but most of their pharmacies will be closed, with the exception of 24-hour locations and select branches.

Notably, wholesale retailer Costco will be closed for the holiday.

The U.S. stock market will also be closed, with no trading on NASDAQ or the New York Stock Exchange.

**Government:** Federal offices and government buildings, such as the DMV and local libraries, will be closed on Monday. State and local courts will also be non-operational for the day.

**Post Office:** The United States Postal Service will be closed on Monday, so there won't be any mail delivery. UPS services will also be unavailable, except for Express Critical, and only a few locations will remain open. FedEx Custom Critical, which handles specialized shipments, will be operating, while FedEx Office will have modified hours.

**Banks:** Labor Day is one of the 11 federal banking holidays, so banks will be closed. However, ATMs and online banking services will still be accessible.
